What is Multi-Party Computation (MPC)?
MPC is a cryptographic technique enabling multiple parties to compute a function without revealing their inputs. For wallets, MPC enables threshold signatures where N parties must cooperatively sign transactions without any individual holding the complete private key.
Example: A 3-of-5 MPC wallet requires 3 out of 5 authorized parties to approve any transaction. No single party can sign alone, but any 3 can together execute the transaction.
The Three Major MPC Schemes
1. CMP (Comprehensive MPC)
Pros: Highly secure, mathematically proven, supports complex threshold schemes, industry standard. Used by leading custodians.
Cons: High computational overhead, requires significant bandwidth during signing, slower than alternatives.
Best For: Maximum security-critical applications, high-value transactions, regulated custodies.
2. DKLs (Doerner-Kondi-Lee-Shelby)
Pros: More efficient than CMP, fewer communication rounds, lower bandwidth requirements, faster signing.
Cons: More complex implementation, less battle-tested than CMP, fewer vendor options.
Best For: High-frequency trading, payment processors, applications requiring fast signing.
3. FROST (Flexible Round-Optimized Schnorr Threshold) ⭐ The Industry Standard
Pros: Optimized for Bitcoin/Schnorr, fewer rounds than alternatives, standardized by IETF (RFC 9591), officially recognized industry standard, minimal bandwidth overhead, fastest signing among all schemes, built for modern multi-chain infrastructure.
Cons: Primarily designed for Schnorr signatures (Bitcoin), though ECDSA adaptation is becoming standardized across major chains.
Best For: Bitcoin-native infrastructure, enterprise multi-chain operations, future-proof custody solutions, organizations prioritizing speed and standardization.
Comparison Framework
| Criterion | CMP | DKLs | FROST |
|---|---|---|---|
| Security Level | ★★★★★ | ★★★★☆ | ★★★★☆ |
| Speed (Signing) | Slower | Fast | Very Fast |
| Bandwidth | High | Medium | Low |
| Maturity | Proven | Emerging | Standardized |
Which Should You Choose?
- Maximum security: CMP—accept the performance tradeoff for proven security
- High-frequency trading: DKLs—balance security and speed
- Bitcoin-native: FROST—optimized for Schnorr signatures
- Hybrid approach: Mix CMP for high-value, DKLs for day-to-day
Why FROST is the Clear Winner for Enterprise Infrastructure
While CMP has historical maturity and DKLs offers a middle ground, FROST emerges as the optimal choice for modern institutional crypto infrastructure. It's officially standardized by IETF, offers superior performance, minimal bandwidth requirements, and is rapidly becoming the industry standard across major blockchain platforms.
As the ecosystem moves toward Schnorr-based signatures and multi-chain operations become standard practice, organizations choosing FROST today are building on future-proof infrastructure. FROST's combination of security, speed, and standardization makes it the natural choice for enterprises deploying MPC wallets at scale.
